What is a Medical Spa?

A medical spa is a facility that operates under the full-time, on-site supervision of a licensed health care professional. The facility operates within the scope of practice of its staff, and offers traditional, complementary, and alternative health practices and treatments in a spa-like setting. Practitioners working within a medical spa will be governed by their appropriate licensing board, if licensure is required (International Medical Spa Association).

How do I protect my medical spa from liability and deal with other legal issues?

Spas and integrative medicine clinics increasingly offer the same complementary therapies (from massage therapy to acupuncture) and share legal concerns, including liability risk management issues and opportunities.  For more information, read about Spa Legal Issues, and contact the Law Offices of Michael H. Cohen.

I am a doctor, does my malpractice insurance cover the Medical Spa?

One other area of potential liability facing a physician is not being adequately insured for medical professional negligence arising within the medical spa.  Most physician insurers will permit a limited amount of “esthetic medicine” to be performed as a part of a physician’s medical practice.  Commonly this caliber of insurer may permit up to 10% of a physician’s practice activities to be esthetic in nature.  It should not be assumed that coverage automatically applies.

Physicians seeking insurance assistance can contact Gina Meyer, Vice President of Scanlon, Guerra, Jacobsen & Burke Insurance Brokers’ Medical Malpractice Department at 800-266-0550 or via e-mail at gmeyer@sgjb.com

Can I finance MedSpa Franchise fees and the equipment?

Yes, you can even finance "soft" costs like the sales tax, extended equipment warranties and training.

I need $500,000 to open my Medical Spa, can I finance everything?

Generally speaking no. We need you to put up at least 20% of the total project cost when soft costs like lease-hold improvements and working capital are involved. If it were for $500,000 in equipment, then yes, it is usually possible to finance all of the equipment.

How much does a typical Medical Spa cost to open?

That will vary, but a typical 2,000 sq ft medical spa could cost you between $400-650,000. It is also not uncommon to see MedSpa's that cost $1 million or more, depending on the location and treatments they provide.
